How common is it for a hacker to get into a websites software and screw with the user.?

For example, a website in which has forums (and no, I am not talking about myspace) and screw up one persons post, not allow them access their email, hack into the users account and send out email under the account holders name.

Do they need your IP address to do this or just to know the companies software? Or if they know the companies software can they simply find your IP address without an exchange of and IM addy?

It is highly unlikely it is a hacker. Generally this sort of thing is caused by someone YOU know who knows your login details and they are playing with your head.

Change your password.

If the problem continues, contact the forum moderator as the problem is at that end.

if a good hacker wants too badly enough, he can probably break into almost anything. Common ways to get into a website user account include figuring out the user's authentication credentials by targeting the actual user. This might involve a trojan horse or social engineering ..

Or he could target the security of the actual site .. search for open directories or password files left open... lots of different ways. Its probably not all that common, but it does happen .. change your password regularly.

They don't need your IP address to do this, they need the IP address of the website they're hacking.

To do this they would need to know the companies software, and (unless the company has really bad security) would probably have to be a company employee.

It's not very common for this to happen, since most people don't want to risk their job just to make someone miserable online.

they are not hackers they are script kiddies whom finds injections for exploit forums and use it .

For example you have a xx version of phpbb forum sowtware and you didnt patched it with the latest updates. If this kids finds the script which exploits xx versions for phpbb they just call it and this gives them to control/moderate that forums like with Admin powers so they can do whatever they want, they can delete, edit posts, post spam even they can delete all of your forum database

mosts hacks occur via a webform. the hacker knows enough about the software compiler including the databse compiler to hack into the databse and website system via a webform.

when you click a submot button a string is going into the webistes compiler software to be processed. a hacker that knows the programming software inside out can send a string to the srver from a browser address bar and get in, once in the hacker can grab information like passwords if he hacked for that and use it.

hackers also break into webservers by using ftp to get into a webserver and that gets them to raw data which they can use. some systems dave password info into text file in a protected directory and a hack can break in know where to go and get the password info to access the entire system.

a secure system doesn't allow this and have a certain way to access the system that even people who have webhost accounts do not know of, this security code runs stealth and tracks any unusual activity.

some hack are simple as far as using someone elses account. many do not use comlex passwords and a simple program can get the password in a few hour of running the program to check differnt character string combos, whan a hit occurs they record that info and then use it to access the account without a right to.

It sounds to me like your password has just been compromised. This could be accomplished as easily as a few guesses, if your password wasn't very "secure". Contact the Web admin and tell him about it, get him to reset your password and send it to your email.

If the admin won't reply, create a new account for the purpose of telling everyone what happened.
